Benefits of Construction Play for Growing Children

What is Construction Play in Early Childhood?

Construction play plays an important role in toddler development, supporting physical skills, communication and emotional growth. At our Oz Education Childcare Centres, children build, test and adjust ideas, practising skills they carry into school and life. This helps them feel capable, while nurturing their curiosity and giving them the confidence to try new things.

Construction play for preschoolers are activities where children get to create, assemble or build things using the materials around them. This can include toys you may already have, such as blocks, magnetic tiles or LEGO. Recycled materials and outdoor items like cardboard boxes and crates can also be used. The main focus is on the process of building, rather than the finished product.

Construction play benefits early thinking by encouraging children to plan and solve problems. They begin to understand concepts like size, shape, balance, and cause and effect through hands-on experience. These early interactions introduce foundational maths and science ideas naturally, supporting spatial awareness, counting and early STEM learning.

Benefits of Construction Play

As children lift, stack and move materials, construction play supports coordination while building strength in small and large muscle groups.

  • Picking up small pieces supports finger strength and grip control
  • Lifting, stacking and positioning items supports balance and body awareness
  • Eye-hand coordination improves through placing pieces accurately

These physical skills support tasks your child will encounter later, such as writing, drawing and learning self-care routines.

Social and Emotional Learning

Construction play for toddlers involves activities in a shared space, where they share materials and ideas, too. This teaches them how to communicate plans, listen to others and respond to challenges together, as well as develop:

  • Language skills by learning how to explain ideas and negotiate roles
  • Persistence by trying again and confidence when they succeed
  • Emotional awareness as they learn to manage setbacks and excitement

Creativity and Imagination

This kind of play is open-minded, which encourages little learners to think creatively. Construction play for preschoolers supports imaginative thinking that allows your child to explore:

  • New ideas without fixed outcomes
  • Different ways to use the same materials
  • Storytelling through the structures they create

The daily learning experiences, routines and menus at our centres are tailored to suit your child’s unique requirements to support their stage-by-stage growth and developmental needs.

Quick Tips for Parents

Another great thing about construction play is that it doesn’t require expensive resources. Everyday items and simple setups can support rich learning experiences at home.

  • Set up wooden blocks on the floor and encourage your child to build tall towers or wide bases
  • Start with simple LEGO builds and let your child change or extend their designs
  • Use boxes, lids and cartons with tape or string to experiment with joining pieces and making shapes
  • Offer crates or large foam blocks outdoors for lifting and creating larger structures
  • Suggest ideas like building a bridge for toy cars or dolls, then step back and let your child guide the process

In these scenarios, parents play an active role by observing, prompting or asking open questions and allowing children time to explore. Stepping back gives your child the confidence to test ideas and learn through experience.
