Sensory Fun with Colorful Ice Circles (for 0 to 2 years)
In March, our little explorers from our Platypus Room (ages 0-2) had a blast exploring colourful ice circles. This hands-on activity captivated their attention, introducing them to a world of vibrant colors and cool textures.
- Learning through Play: As they playfully touched and moved the icy circles, they observed and learned about colour and temperature and developed early fine motor skills.
- Sensory and Social Development: Watching the ice melt into bright puddles while chatting with their educator and friends was not just fun but a small but significant step in sensory exploration and social development!

Introducing Primary Colours (for 2 to 3 years):
In March, the young learners in our Koala Room (ages 2-3) explored colour theory through a fun colour-mixing STEM experiment, discovering new colours by combining the primary colours—red, blue, and yellow—in equal parts.
This experiment is great for toddlers, as it engages their natural curiosity and sensory exploration. At this age, the development of fine motor skills is an important milestone, so incorporating activities like pouring and mixing aligns well with their capabilities. You can enhance the experience by encouraging:
- Sensory Exploration: Toddlers experience the tactile and visual aspects of colour mixing, stimulating their senses
- Basic Cognitive Skills: By observing how primary colours combine to form new colours, they begin to understand cause and effect
- Communication Development: As children describe and share their observations, they build vocabulary and social interaction skills
Bubbly Chemistry reactions (for 3 to 4 years):
In our Koala Room (3-4 year olds) our curious scientists participated in a fizzing STEM experiment. With droppers filled with vinegar, when dropped onto baking soda, they witnessed delightful bubbly reactions unfold. This experiment taps into the natural inquisitiveness of preschoolers who are eager to explore and make sense of the world around them. This experiment is particularly suitable because:
- Fine motor skill enhancement: using droppers to administer vinegar requires control
- Introduction to basic chemistry: Observing the fizzing reaction provides early understanding of chemical reactions in a safe environment
- Excitement and engagement: The dramatic visual and auditory effects of the reaction capture the children’s attention, making learning memorable.

Celebrating Culture & Science (for 4 to 5 years)
In the lead up to Holi Day, little scientists in our Kangaroo room had a blast with a STEM experiment that provided colourful lessons on culture and science. Key benefits include:
Exploring Science: They discovered basic scientific concepts like chemical reactions using bicarbonate of soda and coloured vinegar.
Sensory Exploration: The vibrant colors and fizzing reactions captivated their senses, making learning enjoyable and engaging.
Physical Development: Using pipettes to pour vinegar helped improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Cultural Awareness: Exploring the festival of colours deepens their understanding about diversity that fostered a sense of identity and belonging.
Linking Socio-emotions and Science (for 4 to 5 years)
Preschoolers in the Lizard Room (4-5 years old) have engaged in a dynamic STEM experiment linking science with emotions. Using a mixture of vinegar and baking soda creating a reaction that inflates a balloon, alongside scientific concepts, this experiment is designed to also teach older preschoolers about emotional regulation. As such, the following skills are developed:
- Scientific Inquiry: Children hypothesise and observe the results of the experiment, prompting the use of critical and problem-solving skills.
- Emotional awareness: This experiment serves as a metaphor for managing emotions, helping children understand the significance of expressing feelings to prevent emotional ‘explosions.’
- Social and emotional learning: By discussing emotions and scientific results, children enhance their emotional intelligence and communication skills.
