Oz Education children celebrated the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a wide range of enriching activities in the lead up to NAIDOC Week.
Our children had fun learning from Deanna Schreiber a.k.a Aunty Deanna, a dedicated Aboriginal Elder and founding member of the Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation.
Oz Education Miranda Centre Director Theresa says, “Our children absolutely adored every minute with Deanna. They’ve discovered how the Aboriginal people collect resources from the land and lived off the environment and explored various fascinating aboriginal artifacts brought in by Aunty Deanna.”
Of course, NAIDOC celebrations wouldn’t be complete without traditional aboriginal storytelling, dancing and painting. Aunty Deanna, who is an accomplished artist, mentored our little painters in brushing and dotting until a beautiful masterpiece was created. Our little ones even got their faces painted by Aunty Deanna.
“Our children absolutely adored every minute with Deanna. They’ve gained so much from today’s activities, from understanding and respecting cultures, practicing tolerance to showing compassion, which form an important part of our early learning curriculum,” says Theresa.
“It is also our objective to help our children develop a strong sense of identity from learning about their country’s history and surrounding communities. We’re grateful to Deanna for sharing her vast Indigenous knowledge with our children and celebrating NAIDOC Week with us.”
